Which embroidery file format is better? .dst or .exp?

I'm new to embroidery and planning to get/use the Autopunch software from Singer. I see a lot of sites offer both .exp & .dst file formats for designs - which is better to use?

Personally I would use exp. as that format is more or less usable for any machine, and if in the future you want to change machine brands you would not have to convert the designs. It is your preference though because there are many conversion programs available.I think exp. peroduces a cleaner image to sew out.
